Lot 3090

Murphy 'Batmen' Wireless Receivers: Type 188, with magic eye tuning and broad brown bakelite knobs, concave front profile; and a Type 146, with raised Perspex dial, skirted knobs and winged front speaker baffle (2)

Footnote: One of Murphy's more unusual creations and known later and today as the 'Batman' set, the 146's chassis is tiny compared to the case it sits within. The later 188 was essentially the same, with the idea being the front baffle on the right surface enhanced and nourished the sound output quality. Nickname obviously derives from Batman, due to their winged shape but to the more discerning wireless and television collector, from the 1950s 405-line testcard/pre-transmission card used by the BBC which had the 'wings' detail.

Not Sold

188 turns on and lights up, all controls turn and produce some crackles and pops but not signal. The 146 is without a plug. Bothe with wear and scratches.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
