1881 1d lilac scarce imperforate (SG.174a, cat. £6,000 as pair). The strength of impression may imply an imprimatur. Either way a most attractive fresh example (the scrape of ink at upper left is natural from time of printing) with width of margins guaranteeing this as genuine imperf.

Highlights include a specialised collection of St. Helena stamps and postal history, and a very extensive and impressive holding of Russian postal history with a particular focus on the Post Offices Abroad. The latter collector’s interests also extended through the Baltics to excellent Scandinavian Locals, as well as around the Eastern Mediterranean from the Balkans to Palestine and Egypt.
Amongst the postcards offered in the sale are fantastic albums from a dedicated collector, of high-quality and comprehensively assembled, which include transport related cards of Leeds, Skipton, Lancaster, Teesside and Middlesbrough as well as excellent general Yorkshire cards.
