Early Advertising Poster For The Ill-Fated Parachute Jump By Robert Cocking 24th July 1837

'Royal Gardens Vauxhall - Grand Day Fete on Monday the 24th July 1837 - Ascent in the Royal Nassau Balloon - Mr Cocking will make his first descent on Monday next' and handwritten in margin 'This ascent I witnessed and from the nature of the apparatus fully captured (?) the result that happened. W Cocking was dashed to pieces in his endeavour to descend beyond (?) ???' and initially WC 11x17", 27x43cm (framed)

Robert Cocking was a professional artist and amateur scientist and had developed the parachute to be used himself. He was raised to a height of around 5000 ft by Mr Green in the Royal Nassau Balloo and then released. The parachute suffered a mechanical failure and did not arrest the fall of Mr Cocking who was fatally injured after hitting the ground.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.
