The Principal Navigations Voyages Traffiques and Discoveries of the English nation, Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons, 1903-5. 12 volumes, 8vo, original blue cloth gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, numerous plates and maps, 5) Grote (George). A History of Greece. A New Edition, London: John Murray, 1888. 10 volumes, 8vo, original red cloth, folding maps, partly unopened, 6) Gibbon (Edward). The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, London: for T. Cadell [and others], 1828. 8 volumes, 8vo, later cloth, and numerous others, including sets of Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Alison's History of Europe, George Meredith, Washington Irving, the Dictionary of National Biography, and more, and many single- or two-volume works (qty: 38 boxes) Provenance: John Harold Fawcett CMG (1929-2019), British diplomat, many works containing his armorial bookplate, with the motto 'Non nobis solum sed patriae' ('Not for ourselves alone but for our country') . Fawcett served as ambassador to North Vietnam, 1974-1975, counsellor and head of chancery, Poland, 1975-1978, deputy high commissioner, New Zealand, 1978-1986, and ambassador to Bulgaria, 1986-1989 (thirty-eight boxes) The lot sold as seen, not subject to return.
