Three Men in a Boat Style Holiday on the Thames
The B????? Log, A manuscript account of a boating holiday on the Thames in 1873, three participants on a small rowing boat, participants identified with initials W.B., E.H. and J.R., 'Talbot' is also mentioned several times though they met him ashore. The party left Richmond on the 2nd August, encountering a Regatta at Kingston, they visited Windsor, Eton, Maidenhead, Cookham, Henley, Pangbourne, Wallingford, Abingdon and Oxford, returning to Richmond on the 16th August. A number of friends were met on the way. The log includes details of where they stayed, the food eaten, and places on the river where they bathed. On the second day, 'the boat was rapidly filling having sprung a leak on the Port Bow a little below water line. General dissatisfaction. Took boat out of water, took everything out of her, stopped up leak.'
Ink manuscript on paper, 27 pages, plus 3 page 'To be Let by Public Auction', in roan notebook with lockable brass clasp and key.

A rare late 18th century diary written by Lady Mary Broughton detailing a two-year Grand Tour around Europe, is one of the highlights of the sale. Not only is it a remarkable and detailed travel diary written from a rare female perspective, but it is an important document recording the everyday social history of Europe and a treasure trove of information on picture collections and museums of the era. Also of note is a 17th century Manuscript Account Book with a connection to Crosthwaite in the Lake District, a fine John Speed Map of the World published in 1676, and a copy of John C. Bourne's 'The History and Description of the Great Western Railway'. Amongst the children's literature in the sale is a first edition set of C.S. Lewis' 'The Chronicles of Narnia', and a first edition of Roald Dahl's 'The Twits'.
