Seventeenth Century Manuscript Account Book with Crosthwaite connection.
A manuscript containing entries in various hands beginning in the 17th century, comprising;
The accounts of Thomas Stevenson, a Leith Merchant, predominantly purchases and payments to Thomas Clarke, a London draper, from 1656 to 1672 (Approx 73 pages);
A collection of recipes including; 'For the kinkhost' [whooping cough]; 'A syrope for the kinkhost'; 'A mervillous good remedy for a Consumptione'; 'Ane-other for a Consumptione or Decay in the inward Parts'; 'For a Consumption in the Lights'; etc. (13.5 pages);
An account of 'hedges and ditches, and by whom was made time out of my mind at my Estate in Great Crosthwaite also what I am to pay by less for every Twenty shillings that is raised and paid in the Cunstablewick of underskiddow .... (April 3rd 1738). Ending with value and acreages of the closes (9.5 pages);
An account of a dispute between Mr John Tubman and the writer in 1727 (1.5 pages).
Several 19th century entries relating to land, hedges and family history:
'Feb 10, 1849, Received a notice from the 18 men belonging the free Grammas school to remove some stones and a stoop which was set up and did not suite them ...'
'May 3th 1851 'their was a peice of the Hedg betwixt out stubbings and the Quakers which they tried to throw on to us to make up on the north side the farmer Henry Bennet we had never done it and from old records they made it good and no more aboute it' (3.5 pages);

Loosely inserted is a valuation of |Joseph Mark Farm at Great Crosthwaite.
Inscribed on a loose leaf from the book is 'Sarah Law's book, Whitehaven Feb 11th 1793'. Inside the front cover is written 'Mrs Adamson Book Given by Mr Lindsay'. More recently, it was in the possession of Sir Percy and Lady Hope of Keswick.
Page size 210mm x 178mm, some restoration to worn edges, new endpapers, sheep binding with evidence of missing ties.
