Bourgeois was a landscape and historical painter. Born in London, 1756, his father was a Swiss emigre watchmaker. He became a pupil of de Loutherbourg c. 1774-76, and imitated his subject matter. The dealer Noel Desenfans, made Bourgeois his heir. Through Desenfans, Bourgeois was appointed painter to the King of Poland, who knighted him. In April 1791 George III allowed him to use the title in England. The artist established the Dulwich College Gallery with pictures bequeathed to him by Desenfans. His own works can also be found there.
