. In fully restored condition. Re-lined, cleaned and re-varnished. A good amount of surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. There is some general rubbing/abrasions to outer edges when viewed out of frame. The surface is somewhat flattened as a result of the restoration process i.e the lace of the gentleman's necktie and embellishments to his overcoat bears no impasto anymore. There is a good amount of old retouching and overpainting to most of the outer edges and parts of the background - a good amount of this has deteriorated and was fairly rudimentarily applied in the first instance and is now visible with the eye and much has a more raised appearance than the other brushwork. Some of these areas but not exclusively include a cluster of retouching above the sitter's head, a patch at and around his cheek, neck and within his hair on the right hand side, the edges in general and areas within the background. Very superficial surface scratch immediately left of his right hand cheek and another couple within the right hand side of his overcoat. Odd other minor surface imperfections consistent with age etc...
