A Rare Italian Marriage Fan, the leaf combining different needle lace techniques, an armorial...

A Rare Italian Marriage Fan, the leaf combining different needle lace techniques, an armorial of each important family at either side of a finely worked and clearly wealthy lady holding a fixed fan. Likely late 19th century, the leaf is mounted on 18th century ivory sticks, the gorge painted in pastels with flowers and tiny chinoiserie figures. The borders of the leaf are most likely Venetian needlepoint, perhaps worked in the Burano needlework school, and the quality of the lady and the armorials may well indicate a very accomplished lace-maker from Belgium, using a Point de Gaze ground. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28.5cm
The Burano lace school reopened in 1872 after a period of decline, and still exists on the island off Venice today
See the cover jacket and plate 41 of A Collector's Guide to Fans over the Ages by the late Bertha de Vere Green, a former FCI member, where a similar leaf of Burano needle lace is shown. NB a copy of this book is available to purchase in this auction

Sold for £800
Estimated at £400 - £600
