Three 19th Century Miser's or Stocking Purses, using three different styles. The first, handstitched from a dense fabric, is embroidered with tiny beads at both ends, in large designs with pointed areas top and bottom and a lattice design within. A dull gold metal decoration is attached to each end. Two embossed metal rings serve for closure. The second purse is worked with a diagonal open net effect, with diamonds in cut steel beads worked at each crossing point. Two silver rings with geometric designs serve for closure, and each end is finished with loops of cut steel beads in four bands, of alternating bead sizes. Finally, a colourful knitted example with bands worked in black, ruby, brown, tan, red, pink, these incorporating cream flowers with beaded centres. The centre panel of cream beige and taupe is worked more openly, and two gunmetal and embossed gold rings serve for closures. At the four corners of the straight ends a gold decoration is fitted with loops of gold and silver metal beads which complement the beads on the black end panels (3)
