British School (19th century) Portrait of Mrs Campbell of Shaw holding a basket of flowers Oil on canvas, 70cm by 50cm

Sold for £650
Estimated at £200 - £300

. Re-lined onto a coarse weave canvas. Stretcher shadow which is especially pronounced along right hand side of lower edge where some losses, flaking and lifting is now evident. Varying craquelure throughout but a circular spiral evident area can be seen at bust height and is approx 8 cm in diameter. Damage/hole with associated losses at the top of the lady's head approx 1 cm across (images can be supplied). Some surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Minor rubbing to edges. There has been an amount of retouching throughout the lady's hair, also around and between her fingers within the darker pigments. There is a further more concentrated slightly irregular band immediately beneath her outstretched arm which is approx 4 cm at its widest point and less significant minor retouching and strengthening within the darker shades between her forearm and the arrangement of flowers. The background immediately right of her elbow and covering up to approx half way up her left arm has also had a good degree of overpainting. Other swathes of the background particularly some of the dark tones have evidently received some treatment including a patch within the far left hand side of the dark tones of the floral arrangement. Other retouches to be found elsewhere would be considered less comment worthy. Surface slightly flattened by the relining process but retains a degree of texture in some places.
