An Advertising Fan by Duvelleroy for the Hotel Continental* in Paris, the double paper leaf mounted

An Advertising Fan by Duvelleroy for the Hotel Continental* in Paris, the double paper leaf mounted on shaped wood sticks, the recto with three pastoral vignettes, enclosed by a trompe l'oeil of white bobbin lace. The verso, classically decorated with flowers and ribbons, names the hotel in the central vignette and is marked "Duvelleroy Eventails Paris. Guard length 8 inches or 20.5cm. Together with an unusual fan advertising on the verso the "Restaurant Notta" at 2 Boulevard Poissonerie, 9 Paris, run by G. Duflos Suc.r, signed to the left E. Duvoye. Marked for" Eventails Emile Duvoy Graveur Imprimeur 11 rue de Taitbout, Paris" (the same arrondissement as the restaurant). The recto, printed in brown on beige, has drawings of various characters, including a sailor out walking with his sweetheart, a piper playing whilst accompanied by ducks, and a bridal couple walking to their wedding. Double paper leaf mounted on simple wood sticks; a further fan advertising the Villa des Fleurs in Aix-Les-Bains, signed Guido Gomin (?), the recto with red flowers and a pretty lady c.1900, the verso en camaieu, blue, showing the casino and its gardens. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm, and a final, incomplete, fan advertising the thermal baths at Brides les Bains in the Savoie. Guard length 7.75 inches of 18.5cm (4)

The Hotel Continental opened in April 1878 at Rue de Rivoli/Rue de Castiglione Paris, became the Inter-Continental in 1969, and from 2005 was renamed the Westin

. Fan 1, some nicks to the folds and some rubbing, but clean and sound. Fan 2, the upper guard has broken down by the rivet. Some nicks and crumpling to the leaf. Fan 3 has a tear on the verso layer that would repair, and several more to folds. Some foxing. Fan 4. Fan 4 lacks a section of the leaf, and the lower guard.
