. Panel remains essentially intact. Covered in a thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. There has been amount of fairly consistent retouching throughout the sky and clouds (circa 30-40%) and including some of the darker pigment to denote the shadows within the clouds. The top two thirds of the sail of the ship far left hand side is repainted with some general strengthening to the outline and tops of the timber struts in front of this. The shadowing and darker pigments within the water and shore before and beneath the figures and vessel in the foreground has also been strengthened/overpainted. In addition to the other terracotta coloured sail on the right hand side and more delicate strengthening to the figures and elements of the boats thereof. There is a cluster of tiny sized black specks within the water below the vessel in the foreground which are seemingly incongruous. Fine stable craquelure. Some minor rubbing to edges. Etc...

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
