Cuthbert Bradley (1861-1943)
The Ledbury Hounds
Signed, watercolour and bodycolour, 21cm by 34cm

A study for the same finished painting is illustrated in "The Foxhound of the 20th Century", by Cuthbert Bradley, Routledge, 1914, p.180. The work would appear to be a sketch (with some variances) for the 1913 oil of the same subject matter. "The Ledbury Hounds" 1913, which was comissioned by Sir George Bullough MFH, and depicts the hounds Vandal, Pillager, Partner, Raeburn, Rambler, Blucher, Gloucester, Rascal, Saladin, Baronet, Ragman, Bandit and Wanderer. Sir George Bullough was the Master of the Ledbury Foxhounds from 1908-1921, he also won the Grand National in 1917 with Ballymacad and the Gold Cup with Golden Myth in 1922, and his Rum Kennel of Gordons were also Crufts winning dogs. The complete oil "The Ledbury Hounds" was presented for sale at Bonhams, New York, February 10th 2009, where a more comprehensive account of Sir George Bullough and his achievements were listed, and with thanks to the contributions towards cataloguing made by Jenny Dancy of the Melton Carnegie Museum, Leicestershire, where what is included here is taken.

Auction: Country House Sale, 14th Sep, 2024

The September Country House Sale will include a number of private collections, including The Collection of the Late Captain Edward Cazenove (1923-2000).

The Collection of the Late Captain Edward Cazenove

Devoted hunter and art collector Captain Edward "Teddy" Cazenove was born on 11 June 1923. He was brought up by his New York-born mother, Edith, at the family house of Cottesbrooke in Northamptonshire. Cazenove was educated at Eton and Oxford, where he took every chance he could to hunt.

Shortly after graduating from Oxford, he joined the Army and served diligently throughout the Second World War. He was taken prisoner in France in 1944 and was wounded attempting to escape. After the war, instead of following in his father's footsteps and joining the family firm of stockbrokers, which had been established from the 1820s, Cazenove chose to do what he loved best. He settled in Pytchley, Northamptonshire, to hunt. Highly skilled and consistently enthusiastic, Cazenove became Master of hunts in England, Scotland and Ireland. He died aged 77 in 2000.

The sale will also include a Private Collection of Works by Fred Lawson and a Private Collection of Works by William Miller Frazer.
