Childrens' Literature
Entertaining Fables for the Instruction of Children. Embellished with Cuts. To which is added The TRIAL of an OX for killing a MAN. ALSO A MOMENT'S ADVICE to Children, and Young People. York: Printed by Thomas Wilson and Son, High-Ouse-gate, 1812. 16mo, org. paper wrappers, on blued paper; pp. 32 (wrappers are integral according to both pagination and signature); illustrated with 19 woodcuts.
Thomas Wilson was a publisher and bookseller whose catalogue included a number of books aimed at children, including Robin Hood, Robinson Crusoe and tutor's assistants.

This collection appears to be a later and expanded version of that published c.1790 by J. Drewry in Derby (and around the same time in America by Isaiah Thomas). From a comparison with that edition, there are differences in typesetting - most noticeably in the woodcuts. The woodcuts are printed reversed between the two editions, though otherwise close to identical. This suggests the cuts in this edition were copied from the original directly, thus reversing them when the prints were made. This edition is also longer, with additional fables and the two other pieces. Fables of this nature were popular children's fare, combining whimsical presentation with strict moral outcomes.

It has not been possible to trace this specific edition through ESTC, Worldcat or Copac, though there are copies of the other earlier editions (T98748 for the Drewry edition).

. A touch creased and worn round the edges but clean, with little marking or foxing internally. A nice copy of an odd survival.
