Excellent collection of approx. 1300 mint and used stamps from 1840 to 1950s, neatly presented in a loose-leaf album with condition generally far above average, beginning with an outstanding page of thirty-four penny blacks almost all four margins, plates 1 to 10, the only significant fault being a heavy crease on one of the plate 3 examples. Then 2d blues with four-margin shades, imperf 1d reds with numbers in cross pmks complete (most three margins, some faults, cat. over £2,900), very fine four margin black plate 9 printing, a good range of 'stars' 1d reds and 2d blues, 1864-79 red plates complete used, the plate 225 sound with perfect perfs and light bar cancel, followed by all 2d blue and ½d plates used, 10d embossed unused (thins), etc. The surface-printed has some nice cds examples and mint/unused often mounted beneath the used, highlights including 2/- blue shades: deep blue and blue both wing-margin cds, cobalt and milky shades also very presentable examples, the milky with straight edge (reduced wing-margin), signed. Then the 1867-73 high values page with catalogue over £68,000 incl. 5/- SG.127 cds plate 1 and sound plate 2, well-centred 10/- SG.128, the second 10/- with small tear, £1 on blued paper SG.129 well-centred with relatively neat bar cancel and no discernible faults, 5/- rose plate 4 on blued paper (SG.130 cat. £35,000) with crudely closed tears yet fresh general appearance - an outstanding space-filler - as well as £5 orange on blued paper, forged cancel over specimen ovpt, with corner crease. Further good items include £1 brown wmk orbs with thin, £1 brown crowns and £1 green with no obvious faults, lots of mint KEVII shades and used to £1, UPU £1 used, etc, etc. Offered intact as received from an original estate.

Highlights include a specialised collection of St. Helena stamps and postal history, and a very extensive and impressive holding of Russian postal history with a particular focus on the Post Offices Abroad. The latter collector’s interests also extended through the Baltics to excellent Scandinavian Locals, as well as around the Eastern Mediterranean from the Balkans to Palestine and Egypt.
Amongst the postcards offered in the sale are fantastic albums from a dedicated collector, of high-quality and comprehensively assembled, which include transport related cards of Leeds, Skipton, Lancaster, Teesside and Middlesbrough as well as excellent general Yorkshire cards.
