Summer Fine Sale

  Lot 5

5

Napoleonic Interest: A Glass Tumbler, 19th century, of flared cylindrical form, engraved with a crowned N over a band of diamond cutting and panelled base, 9cm high, contained in a tooled leather cylindrical travelling case embossed with a crowned N and gilt with bumble bees

For a similar example in the Fondation Napoleon see the website napoleon.org where it is discussed that such glasses in their leather containers accompanied the Emperor Napoleon on his travels, alongside campaign furniture and other objects, to allow the maintenance of Napoleon's routines, and to follow Imperial Palace etiquette, and where it is suggested that the goblet would have probably been used during Napoleon's last campaigns of 1814 and 1815. It also notes that only four are known: two the Fondation Napoleon, one in the Napoleon Museum at Thurgau, and a fourth in a private collection.

For another example see Dorotheum Vienna, 20 June 2016, lot 247. A further taller example from the collection of Pierre Jean Chalençon was shown at the Paris Biennale in 2018.

Sold for £8,800
Estimated at £1,000 - £1,500

Glass in good condition, with only minimal surface wear. Case in good condition, with some typical surface staining, minor flakes, scratching and drying-out. Base of case with extensive wear.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the seller. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
