Radu Leon "Gardener's Cut" Signed, pastel, 25cm by 29cm
In August 2021, Radu Leon painted at Dumfries House, Scotland, during an artist residency offered by The Royal Drawing School and The Prince's Foundation. Gardener’s Cut is a response to the beauty of nature and the art collection hosted there. During walks around the Estate at sunset, Leon observed wild blooms and collected withering cut roses from Gardeners. Echoes of Venice - where Leon had lived for a decade - glistened around the House, in the Murano chandeliers and the depth of colour of a canvas by Bassano. Leon arranged these fresh and fading memories into a ricordo, using pastels he has made with historical pigments such as lapis lazuli, carmine, cinnabar, indigo, earths from Pozzuoli, Siena, and the Veneto.
