Sir William Strickland, 6th Bt. (1753-1834)
Young Black-Throated Diver at rest
Initialled and dated 1810, mixed media, together with two further examples by the same hand to include a Female Great Bustard standing and a Bittern standing on a rocky outcrop, all mounted, unframed, 30.5cm by 37.5, 34.5cm by 25.5cm and 39.5cm by 28.cm respectively (3)

Provenance: Artist's Collection, Boynton Hall
Thence by descent

William's depiction of the Great Bustard is significant in the respect that reputedly the last Great Bustard in the UK was shot at Boynton in around 1832. In an invitation from the time to dine at Boynton Hall William described the principal dish, a Great Bustard, as probably "the last of its race"

Young Black-Throated Diver at Rest - General time staining to sheet - slightly more pronounced towards the outer edges against the mount. Consistent medium sized foxing spots more concentrated in a band across the lower half ( visible on the images), although foxing still apparent elsewhere. Brown coloured mark approx 0.5cm in length above the tail of the bird. General surface dirt and some dark coloured scuffs around centre and upper left hand corner area. Further staining around the water. Taped to mount along the top edge. Colour depth slightly tempered by staining etc but broadly good. Bittern - In comparable condition to the former. Laid onto a backing sheet. Female Great Bustard- Some general time staining and sporadic small sized foxing spots but generally of a slightly ''Cleaner'' appearance. Some surface dirt and the off minor scuff. Some flaking and losses to the grey gouache of the chest area. Taped along top edge to mount. Some tempering of colour as a result of time staining but broadly good. These works are unframed and have presumably been held as such in portfolios as loose works- their condition is therefore mostly consistent with this, including any general light handling marks etc. For further information. Please contact the department to satisfy any condition queries.
