Great Britain

A collection of Great Britain assembled in the 1940s housed in a gold-tooled Windsor album, the line-engraved with potential on two unused 1d blacks (one presumed re-gummed), a third with cert. stating washed, then two mint 1841 2d 'lines', likely cleaned and re-gummed, requiring expertization, through to 100+ mint 1d red plates with some fine quality examples including plates 78, 186, 188, 224, etc. Then perf 2d blues plate 9 regummed and plate 15 thins yet attractive, 1870/74 1½d lake-red plate 3 mint though mostly dulled gum, 1/- green outstanding spacefiller (with cert. as re-gummed and repaired), followed by the surface-printed with an interesting range of mint in varying quality, the best being 3d rose Sg.103 plate 9 wing-margin and 1/- green SG.117 plate 4, each with a pulled perf, 6d grey SG.147 plates 14 and 15 mint and 16 unused, 1877 4d sage-green SG.153 plates 15 and 16, latter wrinkled, 1880s issues with tone spots but good colours incl. 3d rose SG.158 plates 20 and 21, 6d surcharge, 1/- orange-brown plate 14, as well as SG.167, 168, 168a and 169, latter two creased, 1881 1d 14 dots pale lilac mint and 14 dots lilac unused, 2/6d blued paper 'specimen' creased, etc. Also a very attractive array of mint Jubilee varieties and KEVII shades to 5/-, lots of mint Downey head shades, excellent profile-head shades incl. an interesting ½d, mint 2/6d seahorses DLR and B/W, £1 green used spacefiller, as well as officials requiring expertization, incl. 1889 1/- dull green Inland Revenue. Enormous catalogue in very mixed condition. Lots ## and # are from this album and further discoveries may well lurk, so close inspection recommended.

Highlights include a specialised collection of St. Helena stamps and postal history, and a very extensive and impressive holding of Russian postal history with a particular focus on the Post Offices Abroad. The latter collector’s interests also extended through the Baltics to excellent Scandinavian Locals, as well as around the Eastern Mediterranean from the Balkans to Palestine and Egypt.
Amongst the postcards offered in the sale are fantastic albums from a dedicated collector, of high-quality and comprehensively assembled, which include transport related cards of Leeds, Skipton, Lancaster, Teesside and Middlesbrough as well as excellent general Yorkshire cards.
