A Large Late 19th Century White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture shaped and delicately gilded, mainly with classical swags, the guards with the addition of painted portraits, a young man to the upper guard and his lady to the other. Centrally to the gorge is a delicate painting of a stone garden ornament with roses strewn at the base. The double silk leaf, painted with classical borders with gilt highlights, and powder blue panels, three painted features bordered with tiny gold sequins, and some tambour metal threads. Centrally, a lady is seated in the garden, holding an open fan coquettishly to her face, as a suitor leans on a stone balustrade trying to catch her attention. To each side of this scene are smaller vignettes each with a winged cherub in flight, one bearing a flaming torch, the other chasing white doves. Two swans feature below these vignettes. The verso is plain save for simple classical designs. Guard length 12.75 inches or 32.5cm. Together with a card fan box covered in paper featuring flowers and birds; and A Late 19th Century White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture plain, the cream silk leaf painted with large cream flowers, possibly magnolia, surrounded by leaves in shade soft green and pink, smaller blossoms on slender branches, the whole close to a river bank. The verso is a plain cream cotton. Cream silk tassel, knotted and fringed. Guard length 12.5 inches or 32cm. Together with a large pale blue card fan box (2)

Fan 1 - Humidity issues, mainly seen from the verso, which has split the silk and come through as brown staining to the recto in places. Fan 2 - Generally very good, pastel colours but strong, no noticeable staining to either recto or cream verso, foxing here and there but very very slight.
