Late 17th Century Stumpwork Picture, incorporating various stitching styles including raised work, embroidery, applique in silk and wool threads, depicting Charles II and Catherine of Braganza standing under an arbour with attendants, the foreground depicts a tiger, stag and nesting bird with chicks on three hillocks, with acorns, flowers and insects, the background shows a large stone house with a black and white tiled paving, flying a flag initialled 'MC', numerous trees, floral motifs, butterflies, birds, insects, peacock and parrot, some of the embroideries are appliqued onto a cream silk ground, made up of four panels stitched together, various paper labels to the reverse relating to the family provenance of the Grensides, in a gilt frame, 60cm by 54cm
Provenance
; The family tree dates back to 1603, which is also the year that William Grenside came down from Scotland with James I. He settled in Yorkshire and had a son Ralph, thereafter various Grensides appear to have had close connections with Kirkbymoorside and the surrounding areas. In the 19th century the stump work was owned by Grensides living in southern England and subsequently by their successors to the present day. It could be possible that the family had some links with the Royal Household during the 17th century and the stump work was purchased during the reign of James II. With the labels to the reverse and family knowledge it appears that the stump work has been kept in the same family for all these years.
