Jane Vivian (fl.1869-1877)
Venice, the lagoon
Signed, oil on canvas, 59.5cm by 106.5cm
Sold for £1,200
Estimated at £400 - £600
Unlined. All keys present but fairly far keyed out and still somewhat slack. There is a gap between the frame and canvas at the top corners. Two old patch repairs to reverse to old restored tears/holes - the one below the gondola on the right has the filling material lifting and cracking slightly. There is a further unrestored puncture to the mid right. There are slight stretcher bar marks and associated cracking, and a few passages of stable drying cracks in the water. A few stable brittle age cracks. Minor distortion at the bottom left edge where perhaps there is debris behind the stretcher bar.
There is some minor dirty marks/transfer/scuffs particularly in the sky. There is old ingrained dirt and varnish, a yellowed old varnish and light surface accretions and dirt including a passage of black flecks above and through the right hand gondola.
Frame: The frame is in fairly poor condition. There are missing areas of composition at the bottom edge, and a couple of repaired sections along the bottom edge. All corners have been opened and crudely filled and painted with bronze, and there are damages to the painted slip - see images.
