An Italian Micro-Mosaic Plaque, 1st half 19th century, worked with the Marriage of Isaac and Rebekah after Claude Lorraine depicting figures and a bridge in an Italianate landscape, 6cm wide, fitted to the cover of an Edward VII silver box, by T Hayes & Co, Birmingham 1908, 8.5cm wide overall

There seem to be two versions of the picture by Claude, known as both the Mill and the Marriage of Isaac and Rebekah, extant. One is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Art London and was originally in the collection of Duc de Bouillon (1605-1652) a general of the Papal army. It was acquired by the National Gallery in 1824 from the English banker John Julius Angerstein. The second version remains in the collection of pictures at the Palazzo Doria Pamphilij in Rome.

Seeing either picture would have been a highlight of the Grand Tour of an English gentleman in the 19th century and so a micromosaic such as this would have been an important souvenir of their visit. Another example based on the same scene and mounted in a gold-mounted nephrite box was sold Sotheby's, London, 29 November 2006, lot 22.
