Ceylon

Excellent and intense working holding of a Ceylon collector who focussed much more on buying than arranging. Thousands of stamps on stockcards, glassines, album pages etc, as bought over the years, hundreds of early issues imperf and perf incl. possible SG.1 four margins used presumed artificially blued (?), SG.3 unused, SG.6 deep shade used with superb margins, 5d used four margins (SG.5), at least 2x four-margin 1/- used (SG.10), 2/- lightly used (SG.12, thin spot), 1861-64 1/- mint marginal example, 2d green SG.29 unused, SG.30 mint, 1864 8d yellow-brown used (SG.32a), SG.33 mint, 1869 5d olive-green mint (SG.66b), 2cts brown scarce perf SG.133 mint signed Diena, 24cts inverted wmk SG.127w used, unusual 1882 20cts on 64cts imperf used (SG.142 var), two 'as is' used examples of the scarce 1885 10cts on 16cts wmk Crown CC (SG.161), 1885 5cts on 4cts rose surcharge inverted used and highly unusual mint example toned (SG.178a), other good ovpt errors, etc, through to KGVI incl. 1938 2cts unlisted perf 12x13¼ MNH lightly toned gum but fresh appearance, 'comma' flaw used, better listed perf varieties to 50cts, 1938/43 5r shades in used multiples, etc, considerable postmark interest including the weird and wonderful, scarce back of the book, etc, etc. Enthusiasts of Ceylon do not miss this.

Highlights of the October 30th Stamp Sale include a very extensive collection of Switzerland assembled over a lifetime by a former President of the Helvetia Society of Great Britain with focus on postal history beautifully written-up on album pages; a specialised collection of Ceylon with many of the key stamps including an excellent range of classics plus King George V key-plate high values, plus from the same estate a group of the Indian State of Jammu & Kashmir including a complete presentation album sent out in 1899 on behalf of the Maharajah. Also an extremely interesting large folio presentation volume of 19th Turkish revenue proof sets with ornate binding suggesting a possibly unique production for the Ottoman royal family.
