Country House

  Lot 71

71

A Wath Chinaworks Dessert Plate, painted by William Willis Bailey, circa 1835, painted with Master Lambton after Sir Thomas Lawrence within a broad border of gilt fronds and gilt moulded rim, marked Bailey Wath Chinaworks in red and inscribed "I loved to walk where some had walk'd before, ahead the rocks that ran along the shore" Tale of the Haul by Crabbe, 23cm diameter

See Cox (Alwyn and Angela) Rockingham 1745-1842, pg.352 for a pair of plates from the same service. Bailey was one of the most notable artists employed at the Rockingham Works, though only one piece is recorded signed by Bailey and with the factory mark. In 1832 he is recorded as being one of the artists employed on the service being prepared for William IV. However, White's Directory of Sheffield for 1833 lists him as Bailey Wm Ornamental Painter, which suggests that he was already working as an independent decorator in nearby Wath upon Dearne. The dessert service from which the current plate originates has porcelain of unknown manufacture painted by Bailey and inscribed Wath or Wath Chinaworks. This service was sold by Christie's on 19 November 1973, lot 4.

Sold for £480
Estimated at £200 - £300

No chips, cracks or repair. Two patches of gilt wear to the inner band. Some other very light gilt scratches throughout.
