Specialist Collector's Used Volume 1: QV to KGVI

A fat Senator album with over 1500 used stamps from 1840 to 1940s and postal history from Mulready envelopes onwards, written-up with varieties galore, offered intact aside from a £5 orange (Lot 30). Highlights include six four-margin penny blacks including plate 1a inverted watermark also showing guide line in corner, with bright red MX (left margin close but clear), two plate 2 examples with neat red MXs, plate 5 with large margins signed Diena and plate 6 on cover, followed by 1840 2d blues, one with very good margins all round. The 1d red imperfs extensive incl. several from black plates, inverted watermarks, complete numbers-in-cross, blue 1844 pmk, lots of lettering varieties etc. Then imperf 2d lines page incl. black MX example with nice margins, perf 1d and 2d 'stars' well-represented incl. 1855 and 1858 large crown 2d perf 16 types, virtually complete 1864-79 1d plate numbers, the 225 very presentable with another sound example on mourning cover, as well as several company underprints, a dozen inverted wmks, etc. Line-engraved continues with 2d plates complete, ½d Bantam complete plates, wmk varieties and again with an additional example of the key plate 9 on cover, followed by embossed set faults but collectable, lots of surface-printed varieties incl. 1850s inverted wmks, 2/- blue shades, 1878 10/- possibly repaired at top and 1878 £1 brown-lilac sound with central cds and numeric cancel at edge. Further key issues include 1884 £1 brown-lilac, 1891 £1 green, KEVII DLR and Somerset House both to £1, £1 seahorse shades, a magnificent £1 UPU corner margin example with light cds postmark, the elusive UPU 2½d inverted wmk, re-engraved 10/- seahorse superb cds block of four, etc, etc. Stated to catalogue £140,000 (2016).

Highlights include a specialised collection of St. Helena stamps and postal history, and a very extensive and impressive holding of Russian postal history with a particular focus on the Post Offices Abroad. The latter collector’s interests also extended through the Baltics to excellent Scandinavian Locals, as well as around the Eastern Mediterranean from the Balkans to Palestine and Egypt.
Amongst the postcards offered in the sale are fantastic albums from a dedicated collector, of high-quality and comprehensively assembled, which include transport related cards of Leeds, Skipton, Lancaster, Teesside and Middlesbrough as well as excellent general Yorkshire cards.
