Specialist Collector's Mint Volume 1: QV to KGVI

Senator album, intact as received with over 1700 mint stamps from 1850s to c.1950, including lots of controls, cylinder blocks, booklet panes and some full booklets, as well as many shades and watermark varieties. Highlights include 1856/7 1d 'stars' mint shades, over 100 mint penny red plate numbers incl. pairs plates 74, 95 and 202, a handful of ½d plates mint, 1887-1900 jubilee types with ½d vermilion and ½d green watermarks inverted, 5d type I (cat. £1,100) toned around edges, 1/- dull green x2, etc, followed by KEVII to 5/- with many shades/printings including useful never hinged, 15 different control letters, 2d Govt. Parcels, etc. Then many Downey heads over five pages with lots of watermark varieties including scarce 1d scarlet wmk inverted and reversed unused (SG.336Wk, unpriced), profile heads incl. MNH 2½d wmk inverted (SG.375Wi), 7d bronze-green (SG.388) and 10d deep turquoise-blue (SG.394a), 5/- B/W seahorse hinged, 1924 Exhibition 1d 'tail to 'N'' variety in corner block of six with usual slight toning, the PUC £1 also toned yet decent appearance, as well as coil leaders from KGV photogravure onwards, several KEVIII booklets, 1938 KGVI 2/- booklet (edition 417) 'cancelled' and punched type 33P (cat. £900), 1939/48 high values set, etc, etc. Stated to catalogue over £40,000 not including the many coil leaders and joins. Condition varies as to be expected, on the whole very attractive.

Highlights include a specialised collection of St. Helena stamps and postal history, and a very extensive and impressive holding of Russian postal history with a particular focus on the Post Offices Abroad. The latter collector’s interests also extended through the Baltics to excellent Scandinavian Locals, as well as around the Eastern Mediterranean from the Balkans to Palestine and Egypt.
Amongst the postcards offered in the sale are fantastic albums from a dedicated collector, of high-quality and comprehensively assembled, which include transport related cards of Leeds, Skipton, Lancaster, Teesside and Middlesbrough as well as excellent general Yorkshire cards.
