A Wedgwood Black Basalt Plaque, late 18th/19th century, modelled in high-relief with The Death of a Roman Warrior, impressed WEDGWOOD
49.5cm by 28cm, in an architectural parcel-gilt mahogany frame
This panel, also known as The Death of Meleager, is taken from a sarcophagus in the Albani Collection, now in the Capitoline Museum in Rome. Wedgwood's version first appeared in the factory catalogue in 1773 and remained in production throughout the 19th century, however, firing difficulties with these plaques meant that they were rarely attempted

Broken in half and with riveted repair to reverse and sides, with associated losses, this is barely visible from the front.
The dimension given is for the ceramic plaque excluding the frame.

The Summer Fine Sale offers nearly 450 lots of ceramics, Asian art, clocks, rugs, works of art and furniture, including a collection of 19th century Terracotta Campagna Urns from Raby Castle, County Durham, a Lock of Florence Nightingale's Hair, and a French Alabaster Figure Group of the Holy Family, probably made in South West France in the late 14th century. A Private Collection of English Pottery will be offered in twenty-three lots, including numerous Prattware and Creamware figures, and the sale will also include pieces of fine 19th century furniture and good early oak and walnut furniture.
