Peterson (Roger Tory). A collection of his books inscribed to Eric Hosking, c.1950-60

Peterson (Roger Tory, 1908-1996). A collection of his books and field guides, mixed editions, all inscribed to Eric Hosking, including:
1) A Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe, Revised and Enlarged Edition, 1966, with original pen-and-ink sketch of a bearded vulture by Peterson to half-title verso, inscribed 'To Eric Hosking, with admiration & affection, Roger Tory Peterson',
2) Europas Faglar, 1st edition in Swedish of the preceding work, 1955, signed by approximately 120 ornithologists including Peterson, Salim Ali, Nagahisa Kuroda, Guy Mountfort, Peter Scott and James Ferguson-Lees,
3) The Bird Watcher's Anthology, 1st trade edition, 1957, inscribed 'To Eric Hosking, with my admiration for his great contribution to modern bird-watching, Roger Tory Peterson',
4) Wild America, 1st edition, 3rd printing, 1956, inscribed 'For Eric Hosking, with my admiration for your photographic genius, best regards, Roger T. Peterson', inscribed below by co-author, 'observations endorsed, James Fisher',
and 8 others, including 4 further field guides (Texas, Mexican Birds, Birds East of the Rockies, Western Birds), several with bookplates of Eric Hosking (qty: 13)

The lot also sold with Elizabeth Rosenthal's Birdwatcher: The Life of Roger Tory Peterson (2008), inscribed by the author to David Hosking, and two photographs by Eric Hosking of Peterson on Hilbre Island completing a sketch for A Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe (1954), one signed by Peterson on the mount. 'It is no exaggeration to say that Roger Tory Peterson played a bigger part in developing the study of birds, as well as many animal and insect species, than any other person in the world ... His name will rank with those two other giants of ornithology - John James Audubon and John Gould' (Obituary, The Independent, 1996).

To include the Library, Pictures and Camera Collection of Eric Hosking OBE Hon. FRPS FBIPP (1909-1991). Eric Hosking is a name which will require little introduction for ornithology enthusiasts. The first professional bird photographer, he photographed over 1,800 species, and his pictures have appeared in some 1,000 books, including the popular New Naturalist series, of which he was photographic editor. To complement his library, Eric Hosking also built a fine collection of pictures by leading 20th century wildlife artists including Archibald Thorburn, Keith Shackleton and C. F. Tunnicliffe. The sale of his photographic equipment provides an unmissable opportunity to own a remarkable array of high-quality cameras, lenses and other apparatus by manufacturers including Contarex, Hasselblad and Zeiss, and will give skilled users the chance of recreating his photographic feats.
