A Late 19th Century Point De Gaze Needle Lace Fan Mounted on Ivory, the sticks gilded, the guards elaborately carved with cupids, flower baskets, a bird and the initials "LB". The Belgian lace surrounds a central cream gauze panel painted with a portrait of Emile Blavet, signed beneath "th Ballervy"? The verso is unadorned. The needle lace is of fine quality with varied and intricate fillings. A large elaborate cream silk tassel incorporating metal threads is attached. guard length 14 inches or 34.5cm. Together with a fine and substantial cream silk fan box bearing the initials "LB on the lid exterior, and Geslin fan label within. The interior of the box is padded and quilted
Provenance: Collection of Mrs Blavet, featuring a portrait of her husband. Emile Blavet was a French writer and journalist, with several novels to his credit. He contributed to many French newspapers, the Figaro perhaps being the most well-known, and was Editor in Chief at others. He married his second wife, Lucie Dupuis, a soprano, on July 4th 1888, in Paris. This may well have been her betrothal fan

The monture is sound, the gauze is strong. Some brown spotting on the lace and the gauze but not extensive. No retailer label in the box.
