Orlando Norie (1832-1901) Military Scene with Troops moving into Position on a Battle Field Signed

Orlando Norie (1832-1901)
Military Scene with Troops moving into Position on a Battle Field
Signed, inscribed with the artist's name on the original frame, pencil and watercolour heightened with white, 39cm by 74.5cm

The great-great-grandson of the artist James Norie. Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1876-1889. His work is illustrated in R.S. Liddell's The Memoirs of the 10th Royal Hussars 1891, and can be found in the V&A, the India Office Library and the National Army Museum.
Not Sold
Estimated at £900 - £1,200

The work is down in colour somewhat with rather pale blues and browns particularly down the left side, but this is probably how the artist has depicted it. The smoke is still visible in the battle field. There are one or two small indentations which are certainly more noticeable in the sky than in the remainder of the composition with minor foxing in places. It is contained within its original Victorian gilt plaster and wooden frame with inner gold leaf wooden slip, under glass. The frame has been restored and regilded.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a condition report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.

A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage people to see an item in person when possible.

Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.

Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
