Follower of John Philip Simpson (c.1853-1866) Portrait of a negro slave, half length, wearing a cream shirt, his wrists in chains Oil on canvas, 76.5cm by 63.5cm
Among well-known British painters who included black slaves and black male figures in their work during this period were Eyre Crowe, William Mulready, Richard Ansdell and Edwin Longsden Long (1829-1891). In Long's work Uncle Tom and Little Eva of 1866, now in the Russell-Cotes Museum, Bournemouth, the black slave bears some resemblance to the model in the above work, so Long does merit consideration on the basis of comparison with certain of his earlier, less finished, paintings.
