To the reverse of the sketch are dimensions relating to the size of the mount and a note from the artist ''About 60 years ago I used to travel by bus to meet my girlfriend (later my wife) who used to live in Trimdon Village. The bus used to pass this spot and when the level crossing gates were shut I was obliged to sit and view this scene until the bus was allowed to continue. Like most Durham industrial scenes it has now long gone. So I decided to paint it from memory''.
