Taxidermy: North American Wapiti or Elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni), circa 1891, Montana, USA, Rowland Ward Record Class, a monumental adult stag shoulder mount looking straight ahead, 16 points (8+8), Length 57'', Circum 7-1/8'', Outside Spread 61'', Inside Spread 49-1/2'', Tip to Tip 53'', from the wall 49- 1/4'', height 78-1/4'', mounted upon a large high quality shaped oak shield. Provenance: Ex. Sir Edmund Loder Collection. Previously purchased as antlers on shield, converted to a shoulder mount by Stuart Jefferies taxidermy Scotland, shield and fittings by Raymond Hutchison. Annie recalls - ''We bought this head from a man in Penrith Cumbria, he said we were welcome to go back and look at it as often as we liked, it took some considerable time to persuade him to let it go, but we feel he liked us enough to become the new custodians of it in the end''.
