A Victorian Silver Two-Handled Cup
by William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman, London, 1896
inverted pear-shaped with central reeded band and on spreading foot, with two leaf-capped scroll handles, engraved with an inscription
20.5cm high, 25oz 3dwt, 782gr
Provenance:
Sold by Order of The Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeths' Own) Regiment, sold to benefit The Royal Lancers Charitable Trust.
The inscription reads 'From the 2nd Batt'n Leicestershire Reg't to the XII Royal Lancers in Remembrance of Good Sport with Their Foxhounds Season 1898-97'.
Estimated at £500 - £800
Fully marked near rim. There is some wear to the marks but each is still legible. Further marked underneath with retailer's name. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the engraving. There are some bruises overall. Rocks slightly when placed on a level surface. There are various labels attached underneath.

Auction: Militaria & Ethnographica, 25th Jun, 2025
The June Militaria & Ethnographica Sale will offer a broad and interesting array of medals, including a fascinating and possibly unique Group of Eleven Second World War and Post War Medals to a British serviceman with a remarkable history of military service, and First World War DSC Group of Medals, which were awarded to Captain George F. Hiles, Master of S.S. Portaferry, which rescued the crew of a French steamer after she had been torpedoed by an enemy submarine in 1917.
Further interesting lots of Militaria include an Inert Rapier Drill Missile measuring 2.32 metres long, the War Diary of Major General Sir Cecil Lowther, who was in command of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards as Lieutenant Colonel, and there are also good quality binoculars, police truncheons, cap badges, Victorian and Edwardian helmet plates and various Edwardian, Victorian and later uniforms.
Of archaeological interest is a very rare Middle Bronze Age Complete Spearhead, found by a metal detectorist in Northumberland. The spearhead dates from circa 1550-1250 BC and is made from copper alloy; it is sold with a report from the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
The sale will also offer nearly 120 lots of regimental silver from The Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeths' Own) Regiment and The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers to benefit The Royal Lancers Charitable Trust and the Fusiliers' Aid Society respectively.
