Thomas Joseph Banks (1828-1896) Lakeland Landscape with Figures and Cattle on a Sandy Path...

Thomas Joseph Banks (1828-1896)
Lakeland Landscape with Figures and Cattle on a Sandy Path
Signed with the artist's monogram, indistinctly dated, oil on canvas, 46cm by 76.5cm

Born in Tadcaster, studied art at the York School of Design and the Royal Academy Schools. In 1859 he settled at Goathland, Whitby. He exhibited at the RA and Suffolk Street.

Sold for £350
Estimated at £450 - £500

The work is in unlined condition, however, there is a patch glued to the reverse of the canvas camouflaging a hole or tear in the sky. The filler and restoration in this old damage is now starting to discolour and deteriorate somewhat and it extends for approx. 3.5cm. There are further scuff marks and scratches which have been retouched and the work has been rather over-cleaned in some areas, unfortunately disturbing some of the artist's original glazes. There is also extensive paint shrinkage and crackelure. It is contained within a fairly contemporary outer gilt wooden frame with inner regilded original Victorian slip.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a condition report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.

A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage people to see an item in person when possible.

Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.

Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
