Two Old Sheffield Plated Meat Plates, Matthew Boulton, oval with a gadrooned border broken with husks and shells, one engraved with a coat of arms and motto to each side; and Two Others Similar, each engraved with a coat of arms and a crest with motto, the largest 43cm wide (4)

The arms on the first meat plate are those of George Hamilton Chichester (1797-1883) as Earl of Belfast and his 1st wife, Harriet Anne (1799-1860), eldest daughter of Richard, 1st Earl of Glengall. Chichester succeeded his father as 3rd Marquess of Donegall in 1844. As these arms have an Earl's coronet it is confirmation the pieces pre-date 1844.

Chichester was an MP as well as a member of the Royal Household. As Earl of Belfast he and his wife were known as "Bel and the Dragon" owing to her hot temper. She was partly brought up in France by the Empress Josephine and it is said "she has all the discernment and finesse of a clever Frenchwoman". Of him they said he was "a typical easy going Irishman, always in debt".

Sold for £500
Estimated at £400 - £700

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.
