Baynes (Mrs G. J.). Part I, 34 [2] pp., colour frontispiece, 4) The Knitted Lace Collar Receipt Book ... Fifth Edition, 24 pp., colour frontispiece, 5) The Knitted Lace Collar Receipt Book. Second Series. Third Edition, 24 pp., 2 colour plates, 6) The Knitted Lace Collar Receipt Book. Third Series. Second Edition, 24 pp., 2 colour plates, 7) The Knitted Lace Chemisette Stomacher Receipt Book, 28 pp. 3 colour plates, errata slip, the lot sold with 8 other titles including Alfred Mills, Costumes of Different Nations, in Miniature, London: Darton, Harvey, & Darton, 1814 (original straight-grain red roan (worn and marked, somewhat shaken, 96 pp., 48 engraved plates, plate at p. 8 strengthened in gutter, that at p. 78 with closed tear), and similar (qty: 9) In the preface to The Knitted Lace Collar Receipt Book Part I the author remarks on 'the unprecedented sale her works have met with; numerous editions, comprising nearly 100,000 copies, having been issued from the press in less than eight months'. They appear to have been read to pieces and survive in very small numbers today: Library Hub traces one copy only of item 1 (British Library) and another an Oxford with a variant title; one copy of all four parts of The Album of Fancy Needlework (BL), and one each of individual parts I and II (Oxford); a handful of copies of various editions of items 4-6; and two copies only of item 7 (BL and Oxford). All were printed by the author's husband Godfrey John Baynes at his Columbian Press in Gravesend, Kent. Provenance: Delamere House, Northwich, Cheshire, seat of the Wilbraham family, though not marked as such.
