Auction: Books, Maps & Manuscripts, 28th Apr, 2023

A rare late 18th century diary written by Lady Mary Broughton detailing a two-year Grand Tour around Europe, is one of the highlights of the sale. Not only is it a remarkable and detailed travel diary written from a rare female perspective, but it is an important document recording the everyday social history of Europe and a treasure trove of information on picture collections and museums of the era. Also of note is a 17th century Manuscript Account Book with a connection to Crosthwaite in the Lake District, a fine John Speed Map of the World published in 1676, and a copy of John C. Bourne's 'The History and Description of the Great Western Railway'. Amongst the children's literature in the sale is a first edition set of C.S. Lewis' 'The Chronicles of Narnia', and a first edition of Roald Dahl's 'The Twits'.
