An interesting collection of the imperforate 1d and 2d line-engraved issues housed in a large stockbook, over 850 stamps including about fifty covers, organised by the plates. A majority of the covers are Northern usages, for example an excellent plate 1a penny black and an 1840 2d blue plate 2 pair (very attractive three margins) are each on covers to the Swaledale & Wensleydale Banking Co. in Bedale, the latter with ‘Leyburn Penny Post’ on reverse. Eleven plates, 1a to 10, of the penny black are represented (8 covers and 20 singles), including very fine four margins plate 2 single and example tied on cover, plate 3 four margins on cover neatly tied by light red MX next to Merthyr-Tydfil large cds in the same shade, etc. These are accompanied by 1d reds printed from black plates, not always correctly identified but certainly including plates 9 and 10 on cover in presentable quality, the plate 9 tied by distinctive Coventry Maltese cross. Then subsequent red plates from 12 onwards with some superb examples, several numbers in cross pmks incl ‘3’ and ‘7’ on cover, etc, through to 1840 and 1841 blue plates. Mixed condition. Plenty here still to research. Accompanied by a small box of mini-stockbooks with further line-engraved and stampless covers, Judicature Fees revenues with 'specimen' ovpts, couple of schoolboy albums, etc.
