A Chinese Export Gold Lacquer Folding Chess and Backgammon Board with Chess Set, Qing Dynasty, mid 19th century, of square shape with indented angles, each alternate square of the draughts board decorated with figures on terraces within a dragon border, containing a set of red stained and natural bone and ivory figurative chess pieces, as Mandarin emperor, empress and courtiers, the pawns as equestrian soldiers, each on "puzzle ball" stems and lotus form bases, the emperors 16cm high, the pawns 18.5cm, the board 56.5cm wide open

Sold for £700
Estimated at £500 - £800

Board - general wear to the gilding and scuffing and scratches commensurate with age and use. Some chipping of the sharper angles. Internally the lacquer is very fresh but again the sharp angles of the box have received chips and blemishes. Chess set - in fully restored condition. Due to the delicacy of the pieces there are numerous chips throughout and there are obvious restorations and replaced parts. Sold a/f. We advise all potential bidders to examine all the chess pieces themselves prior to bidding as they are not subject to return. 190511

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a condition report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.

Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.

Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
