Originally founded by Sir William Lyons in 1922 to build and market his motorcycle sidecars (Swallow Sidecars), by 1930, SS Cars had grown into Britain's premier independent coachbuilder of mass-market automobiles. Debuting at the 1931 Olympia Motor Show, the SS1 Sports Saloon begged comparisons to more expensive alternatives from Bentley and Alvis. Given the company's aspirations to move into sportier realms, there was little surprise when the model line was widened in 1935 to include a two-seat roadster, dubbed the SS 90. Styled by company co-founder William Lyons (later to become Sir William), it featured the sweeping, curvaceous fenders, long front deck, and short rear scuttle that became Jaguar hallmarks. As such, the SS 90 was the first of the company's famous sporting roadsters and the first to advertise the top speed in the model name. The rarity of this marque is such that many homages have been constructed from kit cars to small production bespoke recreations. Occasionally though a tool room example turns up which is so incredibly accurate it's almost impossible to tell the difference between that example and an original pre-war factory model . This example comes under that category. The proportions and attention to detail are so exact this SS 100 has to be one of the finest recreations ever built, using pre-war components and genuine SS 3500cc engine. The car is finished in stunning jet black with contrasting red leather interior. The attention to detail is a credit to the builder. To say this car is concours is almost an understatement. The restoration was carried out by Duncan Buckley Vintage & Classic Car Restoration, and the paintwork by John Hargeaves.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
